Lehigh Valley Martial Arts with Sempai Mick

1. Can you share how your queer identity has shaped your approach to martial arts and self-defense?

I started martial arts from two perspectives- As a queer person looking to feel safer and more confident going out into the world, and as a nerd who just found it super cool. The longer I continued with it, however, the more the former took hold- I love being able to feel like I can go out and do the same things as others without having to feel as constantly on-edge that someone will say or do something to me because of how I look or act. It gave me the courage I needed to feel like I can not only protect myself, but also help and protect those around me, both directly, if something were to happen to someone near me, I could act; and indirectly, by teaching others the same skills. When I was given the opportunity to begin teaching, one of my first thoughts was using it to help other marginalized people.

2. How do you tailor your trainings for the LGBTQ+ community specifically?

What's really wonderful about martial arts is that it doesn't need to be tailored to any one individual group. Being able to protect oneself is universal. Our classes have people of all walks of life- All ages, all gender identities, all abilities. Everyone is welcome here, no matter what.

3. How do you create a safe and affirming learning environment during your sessions?

In our classes, everyone is shown respect, regardless of their age, rank, ability, or identity. Older students respect younger ones, higher ranks respect lower ones, nobody is told they cannot do something- if there's a limitation, we adapt and make sure everyone has a way to participate in every part of class.  Also, we use nongendered titles in our Karate program. Inclusivity helps everyone, even in unexpected ways!

4. Since the theme of Lehigh Valley Pride is Ridin' with Pride in 2025 - how are you ridin' with pride this year?

I'm ridin' with pride all the time! Being unafraid to be genuine anywhere I go, being able to confidently stand in front of my students as my authentic self, and to help them learn to be their authentic selves, whoever that may be to them. I am extremely proud to be myself, and want to help others feel the same way.

Thank you Lehigh Valley Martial Arts! Catch them at our Lehigh Valley Pride on August 17, 2pm-7pm teaching a self defense workshop!
