Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center is hosting coloring book artist Jacinta Bunnell as an artist in residence from November 11-14, 2019.
Jacinta's visual art is inspired by miniature people and toys, constructed primarily from recycled materials. She learned to draw from children. She has a huge stash of patterned, quirky, superbly alive paper which she has been collecting since childhood. Among the multifarious pieces are: torn wrappings from Groundhog Day celebrations, colored engravings from encyclopedias for babies, pictures of toads and concerned citizen fliers. Jacinta’s work has been shown at Allegheny College Art Galleries, KMOCA, Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, Albany International Airport, Rosendale Cafe, TeamLove Ravenhouse Gallery, Mohonk Mountain House, and Wired Gallery.
Jacinta has toured the U.S. and Canada with The Sparkle Kids Action Network, The Gadabout Film Fest, Neko Case, Maeve End, Anne Elizabeth Moore, Julie Novak, Irit Reinheimer and Michael Truckpile. She is the author of four coloring books: The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book, Sometimes the Spoon Runs Away With Another Spoon, Girls Will Be Boys Will Be Girls Will Be... and Girls Are Not Chicks.
Community members are invited to participate in TWO public events with Jacinta!
On November 11th - Jacinta will teach a workshop where participants can create their own gendertastic coloring book!
MAKE YOUR OWN GENDERTASTIC COLORING BOOK WORKSHOP
Have you ever envisioned the Incredible Hulk as a world-class jazzerciser? Wished Bert and Ernie had a queen-size bed they sleep in together? Are you frustrated with the lack of non-binary and queer visibility in media? Now's your chance to change all that! Here is a place to let your visions for a better, more inclusive world get back at all the fairy tales that have always hurt your feelings. Come hang out with other boys who dressed as the Little Mermaid for Halloween, ladies who engineer dare-devil roller coasters, and a manifestation of genders in between.
This workshop with Jacinta Bunnell is like spending an afternoon in the big gay craft cabin at your favorite summer camp. Using found images from pop culture, you will transform these ordinary images into your own gender-tastic coloring book. Because so much media does not include Transgender, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Queer, Gender-fluid, Non-binary, and Feminist characters and ideas, we will deliberately work to change this. Hundreds of these D.I.Y. (Do-It-Yourself) coloring books exist around the country as Jacinta has left behind a trail of inspiration in every place she's traveled. Don't miss the chance to make friends, cut-n-paste with a real glue stick, and change the direction of pop media. No longer will there be a shocking lack of narratives for gender outlaws! We will make truths to set people free. No artistic experience necessary. All ages.
On November 12th - Color with Jacinta at our Community Coloring Party! We will have pages from her coloring books available to color with, and copies of her coloring books will be available for purchase.
