The Fine Art Galleries at Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center invite the community to attend a gallery reception on May 18 from 6-8pm for a special exhibit of "Foreign Lands" by WPA Artist Hubert Davis. This exhibit of Hubert’s work features works represented by Ron De Long. The exhibit will be on display from May 16-June 26.
Hubert Davis (1902-1981) was an American lithographic artist of the Depression. His earliest works date back to 1925 and were primarily paintings of landscapes and figures. Davis started making lithographs by 1931 and continued to use this medium to communicate the effects of the Depression. These lithographs were published by the New York brand of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Founded by President Roosevelt, from 1935- 1943, the WPA actively assisted American artists during the Great Depression. Without its aid, masterpieces created by this generation of artists would not have been made.
The exhibit at The Fine Art Galleries at Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center will show alongside two other exhibits featuring him in the region. The Ronald K. De Long Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley presents “Hubert Davis: Scenes of Pennsylvania,” which runs April 3 to June 9, and Civic Theatre of Allentown's Theatre 514 Gallery will present “Hubert Davis: Costume Design,” from May 22 to July 21.
