Artist Statement:

As an artist, I have always been interested in diving deeper into the human being.  I’ve wanted to explore not only what is on the exterior but also the emotion of the being that lies beneath.  #MascFem seeks to explore the juxtaposition of the masculine and the feminine inside each of us.  In many ancient cultures, the existence of both the masculine and the feminine was revered and honored.  The Indigenous tribes of the Americas have two-spirit.  The Hawaiians have mahu.  In South Asia there are the hijra.  The embodiment of both genders is the ability to find the balance between the yin and the yang, the sun and the moon, the fire and the water.

In this series I have used the inspiration from twenty-one drag queens, drag kings and non-binary performers to create a colorful, vibrant world that questions what is masculine, what is feminine and what is beauty.  There is something about each of these performers that called to me – a fierceness, a fire, a magnificence.  With their images to guide me, I created a world that is joyful and fun; a world that says: We are here and we will be seen!
